All of the elements of evidence-based practice have existed in the medical community and in the practice behavior of the best academically trained clinicians for a long time. What is new is the idea of integrating these elements, including a simplified method of analyzing clinical studies, into a systematic approach.
To do this requires the tools of information technology to facilitate access to the relevant studies and to minimize dependence upon remembered information extraneous to clinical and pathophysiological knowledge.
