OLD BUSINESS

Minutes of the June meeting were reviewed and approved.

Y2K EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

NYAM WORKSHOP 2000

Peter Dayan reported that plans for the workshop are on target and that the needs assessments will be sent out to the participants, of whom only 2 are from the metropolitan area. The tutors are Dayan, Eskin, Celentano and Cordell; the tutor trainees are Ben Yeh and Steve Miller. Peter Wyer plans to include an extra session during the workshop on medical student teaching and possibly one on the tips project.

PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY MEDICINE FELLOWS' WORKSHOP

Peter Dayan reported that the 2 day workshop went well and included 3 lectures (foreground/background questions, searching the literature and numbers needed to treat). During each of the 4 tutorials, formulating the clinical question was discussed. The workshop was supported by the American Association of Pediatrics ($1500) and Peter hoped that the workshop could be repeated next year.

TREASURER'S REPORT

Just prior to this meeting, a meeting was held with Ann Boehme from NYAM to review our account at NYAM. Present from our group were Peter Wyer, Peter Dayan and Barney Eskin. Funds received in the year 2000 were:

4/21/00 Emergency Medical Associates $400

7/27/00 LIJ (Wyer honorarium)$300

7/31/00 Pfizer $5000

8/18/00 AAP (Wyer honorarium) $400

8/26/00 Roche $3000

Expenses paid out in 2000 were:

4/4/200 Listserv mailing list fee to NYAM $150

January-June 2000 Monthly food @ $100/month $600

We will also have additional expenses from the upcoming workshop; they will obviously not be finalized until after the workshop.

Ann Boehme will confirm our transactions to date and submit a final accounting to Phil Hubel.

NEW BUSINESS

PLANS FOR THE YEAR 2001 AND BEYOND

Peter Wyer wrote a letter to Neal Flomenbaum, Chairman of the Emergency Medicine Section of NYAM. Because the working group headed by Roseanne Leipzig has decided to dissolve, we will become more autonomous. Peter suggested that we become the focus of the EM section of the Academy, if not its principal effort.

FUNDING FOR FUTURE ACTIVITIES

Future workshops will need to be funded. We estimate that we would need to pay an administrator around $10,000 to prepare for a workshop. If this cost were spread over 32 participants, this adds an extra $313 per participant. Funding might be obtained from the Emergency Medicine Foundation (EMF), ACEP or SAEM. Ilene Willets offered to help write an EMF grant application, for which the deadline is February 2001. A target date for such a workshop might be the spring of 2002; alternatively, holding the workshop in December might be attractive because of the holiday activities in NY at that time of the year.

The next monthly meeting will be held at the NY Academy of Medicine, 1215 Fifth Avenue (at 103rd St.) at

5:15 PM on Tuesday, November 7th. Food will be available.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:30 PM.

Respectfully submitted

Barney Eskin
